Bryan Rice

Denmark's Bryan Rice makes earnest, often uplifting pop anthems of nuanced emotions that navigate heartache, reassurance, and encouragement. After breaking through with the Danish radio hit "No Promises" from his platinum-certified 2006 debut album, Confessional, he returned to Denmark's Top 40 with 2007's Good News. Rice landed a Top Three hit at home with 2010's "Breathing," which competed for a spot in the Eurovision Song Contest. Its motivational current was continued through albums like 2015's Hear Me as I Am and singles such as 2017's "Warriors" and 2023's "Cloudless." Born Brian Risberg Clausen in 1978, Bryan Rice logged a few years in the music industry as a backing and demo singer before emerging as a solo artist. He was working as a hotel receptionist when producer and label owner Remee reviewed some submitted recordings and, impressed with Rice's voice and charisma, offered him a contract with the newly founded Boom Records (EMI) in 2005, without even having met Rice in person. The singer's full-length debut, Confessional, saw release in August of 2006. Penned by Jonas Schrøder and Lucas Sieber, album single "No Promises" was included on the soundtrack of the popular film Nynne and was an enormous Danish radio hit, put on heavy rotation for better than six months. Also fueled by follow-up singles "Homeless Heart" and "Can't Say I'm Sorry," Confessional climbed to number four on the national album chart and earned platinum certification by the following year. Rice's 2007 single "I Lied" and a busy summer touring schedule primed Danish audiences for the Border Breakers label release of his sophomore effort, Good News, which peaked at number 36. Rice had his biggest chart hit yet in early 2010, when his recording of "Breathing," a song written by Peter Bjørnskov, was selected to compete for Denmark's entry in the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest. "Breathing" eventually finished second, but it went to number three on the national singles chart and was included on Rice's third studio album, Another Piece of Me (RecArt), that October. It also included duets with Sweden's Emilia and Denmark's own Julie (Julie Berthelsen). The Julie track, "Curtain Call," charted in the Top 20 in Belgium. The concert album A Live Piece of Me: The Scandic Sessions followed in 2011. In 2014, Rice competed again in the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix for a spot in Eurovision Song Contest, with "I Choose U," which was eliminated before the finals. However, it earned a spot on the singer's empowering fourth LP, Hear Me as I Am, issued by B:REC in February 2015. Rice followed that with a series of short-form releases, including the EP Bryan, Pt. 1 and a reworked version Bryan, Pt. 2 in the latter half of 2017. They were highlighted by the anthemic single "Warriors," featuring the string ensemble Who Killed Bambi, who were joined by China's Jeno Liu on the sequel EP. Singles such as 2018's "Glow" (with Camille Jones), 2019's "Christmas with You" (with the Danish Boys Choir), and 2021's "Yes to All" were among Rice's output heading into the new decade. In the meantime, Rice married Mads Enggaard and started a family. He followed with another seasonal song, 2022's "It's Christmas and I'm Coming Home," with the disco-injected "Cloudless" in mid-2023.
