Blind Guardian
Los alemanes Blind Guardian perfeccionaron una fusión de power metal europeo gótico y fantasioso con la velocidad y la precisión técnica del speed metal. La banda publicó Battalions of Fear en 1988, seguido de Follow the Blind un año después. Lanzado en 1990, Tales from the Twilight World se convirtió en un éxito underground y llevó a un acuerdo con la división japonesa de Virgin Records. Su debut en una discográfica importante, Somewhere Far Beyond, se publicó en 1992. Blind Guardian conectaron con el antiguo productor de Metallica Flemming Rasmussen para Imaginations from the Other Side de 1995. Lanzado en 1996, The Forgotten Tales, una colección de versiones y versiones alternativas, sentó las bases para Nightfall in Middle-Earth de 1998, un álbum conceptual inspirado en Tolkien.
