Stewart first started on drums when he was seven and from an early age he listened steadily to jazz. At William Patterson College during 1986-1988, Stewart studied with Dave Samuels, Harold Mabern, Rufus Reid, and Joe Lovano. He made his first recording with tenor man Scott Kreitzer, cut a pair of best-selling albums with Maceo Parker, freelanced a bit, and then spent five years with Scofield's band. Telepathy appeared in 1997.
