Gorillaz fue creado como un conjunto que incluía a numerosos colaboradores y productores, todos ellos guiados por Damon Albarn de Blur, compositor, cerebro y cabecilla del grupo. Durante toda su carrera Albarn mostraba su mejor trabajo cuando se remitía a su estilo típico y Gorillaz no solo le proporcionó una plataforma ideal, sino que supuso una oportunidad para probar cosas que no podía hacer dentro de los confines de Blur. En el primer álbum de Gorillaz, Damon parecía como si estuviese disfrutando por primera vez desde Parklife.
