Cracker Island representa una suerte de retirada para Gorillaz, un alejamiento de los excesos colaborativos de The Song Machine. Por supuesto que contiene invitados – una de las razones de ser del proyecto Gorillaz – pero esta vez Damon Albarn trabaja principalmente con Greg Kurstin y Remi Kabaka Jr para poder redondear un disco más conciso y homogéneo. En efecto, más allá de Bad Bunny en "Tormenta", los otros participantes (entre ellos Tame Impala, Stevie Nicks y Beck) asumen un rol secundario o directamente textural. Por una vez, Albarn no utiliza a Gorillaz como excusa para explorar nuevos territorios sonoros sino para reafirmar sus conocidas virtudes como compositor y productor, en particular la creación de un electro-pop colorido y vibrante teñido de aires melancólicos.
