The "nostalghia" referred to in the title of this PentaTone release is not really that for Bach, whose music is very much present in the repertory, but to an older way of interpreting his music, one that was current a century ago. The Bach arrangements by Ferruccio Busoni certainly show up on concert programs and recordings, but to hear an entire album of Bach played this way is not so common. There are several arrangements by Busoni included, and pianist Francesco Piemontesi emphasizes the centrality of Busoni in this tradition by adding a neo-Baroque work by Busoni himself, the not-terribly-common Toccata, BV 287. The program is mostly Bach, though, whether arranged -- by Busoni or others -- or straight, as in the case of the Italian Concerto in F major, BWV 971: even here, there are plenty of modifications to Bach's music, in the form of tempo fluctuations and offbeat accents. Piemontesi does well to frame his program with the Prelude and Fugue in E flat major, BWV 552 ("St. Anne"), as Bach himself did in one keyboard collection. Reactions to all this will necessarily be a matter of taste, but it's worthwhile to have a whole program of Bach done this way and realize that in 1921 when Busoni wrote his Toccata, this was Bach for all but a handful of listeners. The program holds together nicely on its terms, and the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin, normally ponderous in Baroque music, here fits Piemontesi's aims well.
