Should
Austin, Texas shoegaze/dream pop group Should were formed in the early '90s by brothers Marc and Eric Ostermeier, and Tanya Maus. Originally named shiFT (they switched when they ran across another band with the same name), the trio recorded its hazy, dreamy pop in a unique fashion using guitar loops, samplers, and distortion derived from overloading an old four-track mixer. Their first EP, A Folding Sieve, a six-song record released under the shiFT moniker on the ND label, came out in 1995 and was followed in 1997 by the "Own Two Feet" 7”, also on ND. Their second album, Feed Like Fishes, was released in 1998 by the Minneapolis-based Words on Music label. The band ceased recording after this, though Words on Music issued a new version of A Folding Sieve that added bonus tracks made up of previously unreleased songs and covers of songs by 18th Dye and the Jean Paul Sartre Experience. In 2010 the band resurfaced as a duo minus Eric Ostermeier and released a new album, Like a Fire Without Sound, for Words on Music. Soon after, A Folding Sieve was tapped to be part of Captured Tracks Shoegaze Archives series and was reissued in 2011 with an additional two bonus tracks. The label also released a cassette, Resonate, that was a reissue of a cassette released by shiFT on Whirlingpool Records in 1993.
