Kenya Vaun

Kenya Vaun's music is a unique blend of R&B styles, a testament to her musical influences and her own creative vision. Hailing from Philadelphia, she draws from two rich R&B traditions: the deep, crate-digging grooves of the ‘60s and ‘70s and the confident neo-soul singers of the ‘90s and 2000s. Her debut album, The Honeymoon Phase, released in 2024, is a perfect example of this cross-generational style. Album singles “Summer” and “Used To” not only exemplify her unique style but also highlight her rising appeal among listeners. Vaun was born in Philadelphia and grew up in nearby Norristown. Through her mother, she developed an appreciation for singers like India.Arie, Lauryn Hill, Angie Stone, and Mary J. Blige, and sought to follow in their footsteps. She made school a priority but garnered some underground attention for her first single, 2018’s playfully romantic “Movie Night.” She put her studies on pause in 2023 when she signed to 300 Entertainment and started getting attention with the single “Summer,” a nostalgic slow-burner built off a sample of rapper Ahmad's “Back in the Day” (itself built off Teddy Pendergrass' immortal slow jam “Love T.K.O.”). “Summer” earned praise from Joe Budden and Ebro on their podcasts and radio shows, and two of the track’s producers, Philly duo Carvan & Ivan, got longtime collaborator Musiq Soulchild to appear on a remix. The follow-up single “Used To” flipped a sample of Billy Stewart's “Sitting in the Park” to significant effect and set the framework for The Honeymoon Phase, released in 2024.
