Giovannie and the Hired Guns

With a sound that draws on everything from Southern rock, alt-rock, and metal to Latin hip-hop and música norteña, Giovannie and the Hired Guns introduced their gruff-voiced country-rock fusion with the Bad Habits album in 2017. By then a celebrated live act in their native Texas, they followed up with a 2020 eponymous LP and 2022's even more alt-rock-minded Tejano Punk Boyz, their major-label debut. Originally from Mineral Wells in North Texas, bandleader Giovannie Yanez began performing his own soul-baring songs at local bars in his late teens. During that time, he was working days at a rock quarry before landing a job at a pawn shop, where he met bassist Alex Trejo. They put together a band with drummer Milton Toles. The Stephenville, Texas-based group started playing a grueling live schedule and were eventually selling out shows across the state. Their self-released debut album, Bad Habits, was written by Yanez and produced and engineered by Taylor Kimball (Austin Meade, Kody West). Giovannie and the Hired Guns were soon sharing concert bills with Kody West and Read Southall Band, and in 2019, they played to a crowd of 36,000 when they opened an Arlington show for Jason Aldean. Featuring guitarists Chance Bannister and Adam Urbanczyk, their second album, simply titled Giovannie and the Hired Guns, followed in mid-2020. The record only increased their following, with the breakup-themed "Rooster Tattoo" garnering millions of streams. Guitarists Jerrod Flusche and Carlos Villa replaced Bannister and Urbanczyk, and the five-piece signed with Warner Music Nashville in mid-2020. Giovannie and the Hired Guns' major-label debut, Tejano Punk Boyz, was released in October 2022.
