Duncan Ward
Duncan Ward is among Britain's most versatile conductors of his generation, with talents ranging from the Baroque to contemporary music, from orchestral works to opera. He is the conductor of the philharmonie zuidnederland (the "South Netherlands Philharmonic").
Ward was born in 1989 in Britain's Kent County and grew up in Longfield. He attended Dartford Grammar School in nearby Dartford. Although his family was not musical, he took a strong interest in music and wrote a full-length musical based on Alice in Wonderland during a summer vacation when he was 12. The school's head of music, Simon Hayward, encouraged him to see it through to production, and Ward led rehearsals and a year-end production. Ward attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, studying piano, conducting, and composition. He has remained active as a composer; after being named the 2005 BBC Young Composer of the Year, he saw his works performed by major ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, The Sixteen, and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Ward became the inaugural Conducting Scholar at the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic in 2012, assisting Philharmonic conductor Simon Rattle and conducting orchestra musicians in a variety of special concerts. In 2012 and 2013, Ward served as assistant conductor on recordings by the Victorian Opera Orchestra.
In 2015, Ward became the conductor of Britain's Sinfonia Viva. He began to find guest appearances with major orchestras in various countries, working frequently with the London Symphony Orchestra, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, and other groups. He has conducted the BBC Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, and, in the 2023-2024 season, the Staatskapelle Dresden. He has worked with ensembles as diverse as the early music-oriented Balthasar Neumann Orchestra and contemporary music specialists, including Ensemble Modern and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. In 2020, Ward made his recording debut as chief conductor, leading the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra on trumpeter Simon Höfele's album Standards. As of the mid-2020s, Ward held the position of chief conductor with the philharmonie zuidnederland and music director of the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra. He conducted the Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin on the 2021 album Helge Burggrabe: Human, and in 2023, he moved to the Mirare label, leading the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in backing violinist Liya Petrova in the Violin Concerto, Op. 30, of William Walton.
