En un coup d'œil à la couverture de Perfect Symmetry (2008), on s'aperçoit tout de suite que Keane a considérablement changé d'esthétique, les formes géométriques remplaçant le style vintage plus chargé des albums précédents. Sans grande surprise, il en va de même pour la musique ; le groupe prend une direction aux influences synthpop de façon remarquable. Tandis que les chants plaintifs de Tom Chaplin constituent le point de reconnaissance essentiel, les arrangements sont généralement rythmés et chargés en synthétiseur, voire parfois à la limite de la techno. Bien que le disque ne soit pas un nouveau départ définitif (voir le titre mené au piano empreint de douleur "Love Is the End"), il annonce tout de même une transformation, un changement de genre brillant.
