Fünfzig Jahre nach seiner Erstveröffentlichung im Jahre 1968 kommt das legendäre Cheap Thrills zusammen mit einem Haufen unveröffentlichter Aufnahmen und Raritäten neu auf den Markt. Aus diesem Anlass bekommt das zu einer Million Exemplaren verkaufte Opus nun seinen Originaltitel Sex, Drugs & Cheap Thrill zurück, den Columbia damals für allzu skandalös hielt und deshalb aussortierte. Mit dem Bestseller Cheap Thrills gibt sich Janis Joplin vor den Augen aller zu erkennen, denn er zeigt den wirklichen Charakter der Kozmic Mama, die sich im Sommer 1968 den Einspielungen mit Leib und Seele verschreibt. In Summertime, dem emotionellen Höhepunkt des Albums, treten ihre Reibeisenstimme und ihr abgefahren vibrierender Rock eindeutig zutage.

Wenn auch die sieben ursprünglichen Titel auf dem von Robert Crumb illustrierten Cover, mit dem brutalen, fast schmutzigen Sound live aufgenommen worden zu sein scheinen, so wurde doch einzig und allein Ball And Chain beim Konzert am 12. April 1968 im Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco aufgezeichnet. 37 gnadenvolle Minuten reiht Cheap Thrills aneinander, denn es fängt an mit Combination Of The Two, der sechsminütigen Jam-Session zwischen Sam Andrew III und Joplin, geht weiter mit dem Klassik Rock in Oh Sweet Mary und reicht bis hin zum Blues des I Need A Man To Love.
