Das zehnte Studioalbum von Devendra Banhart ist eine Art poetisches Paradox. Freude und Leid, Licht und Düsterheit, metaphysischer Höhenflug und physische Standhaftigkeit… All diese Gegenpole sind zu einem Ergebnis kombiniert, das die Leichtigkeit der Kings Of Convenience und den Trübsinn von Velvet Underground widerspiegelt. Wie gewöhnlich beherrscht der Amerikaner/Venezolaner die stilistischen Ambivalenzen (Bossa Nova, Soft-Rock, häuslicher Folk, Dream Pop…), die im Dienste von Themen wie Mutterschaft, Tod, Freundschaft oder auch geografischer Herkunft stehen. Der minimalistische Geist seines Vorgängeralbums Ape in Pink Marble (2016) lässt den feinen Arrangements nun genügend Freiraum, vor allem beim Duo von Will I See You Tonight? mit der großartigen Vashti Bunyan. Die Wiedervereinigung zwischen dieser Matriarchin des Folk und ihrem spirituellen Sohn gibt dem Titel dieser Platte erst Sinn: Ma ist nicht nur ein intimes Geständnis von einem exzellenten Crooner, sondern auch eine elegante und würdevolle Hommage an die Kindheit. © Alexis Renaudat
