Das dritte Album von Evanescence, das fünf Jahre nach „The Open Door“ veröffentlicht wurde, setzt dort fort, wo das letzte aufgehört hat. Es präsentiert die Sängerin Amy Lee, die über den dunklen Gothic-Sound der Band von Tod, Existenzangst und Zerrissenheit singt. Evanescence finden auch Platz, um mit anderen Einflüssen zu experimentieren, und verpacken Drum-Loops und Synthesizer in einen ansonsten gitarrenbetonten Sound. Obwohl für die Produktion ursprünglich Steve Lillywhite vorgesehen war, wurde dieser letztendlich von Nick Raskulinecz ersetzt, der dieselbe grundlegende Härte, die er auch den Foo Fighters für „In Your Honor“ verpasst hatte, bei Evanescence einfließen lässt.
