Diese beeindruckende Zusammenstellung präsentiert 100 der 1500 Lieder, die die argentinische Tango-Canción-Legende während seiner Karriere aufgenommen hat, von denen allerdings nur 970 bekannt sind. Die hier zusammengetragenen Titel stammen im Wesentlichen aus Aufnahmen, die Carlos Gardel zwischen 1920 und 1935 für das Label Odeon machte, der Aufstiegsphase seiner Karriere, die am 24. Juni 1935 ein jähes Ende in einem Flugzeugabsturz fand. Seine ersten Schritte machte er im Duett mit José Razzano, der sich nach gesundheitlichen Problemen am Hals und einer gewissen Immobilität von der Bühne zurückzog, um sich zumindest zunächst um die Angelegenheiten des größten Tangosängers zu kümmern, den die Erde je gekannt hat. Carlos Gardel wurde in Toulouse geboren und kam im Alter von 2 Jahren in den Armen seiner Mutter nach Buenos Aires. Er wurde erst spät Argentinier, nachdem er Bürger von Uruguay geworden war, das lange Zeit behauptete, sein Geburtsland zu sein. Gardel leugnete diese Information nicht, weil er den militärischen Verpflichtungen gegenüber Frankreich damals mitten im Ersten Weltkrieg entgehen wollte.
Viele der 100 Lieder, hauptsächlich Tangos, ein paar Walzer, Milongas oder Canción Criollo, erschienen in dem einen oder anderen der zehn Filme, die er gedreht hat. Manche haben seine Geschichte geprägt. Tomo Y Obligo ist das allerletzte Lied, das er einige Stunden vor seinem Tod auf der Bühne spielte, und Recordandote, komponiert von Gardel und geschrieben von Alfredo Le Pera, ebenfalls ein Passagier des tödlichen Flugzeugs, wurde erst posthum von seinem treuen Gitarristen Terig Tucci und José Le Pera, dem Bruder des Autors, vollendet. Einige dieser Tangos haben auch durch andere Stimmen europäischen Erfolg erfahren, wie Volver, gesungen von Estrella Morente im gleichnamigem Film von Pedro Almodovar, oder Adios Muchachos, in Frankreich von Tino Rossi und Claude François bekannt geworden. Wir finden auch Madame Ivonne, den letzten Tango, den Gardel 1933 in Argentinien aufgenommen hat - die Fortsetzung seiner Studiokarriere fand dann in Barcelona, Paris und New York statt. Diese 100 Lieder verewigen einen Duft einer anderen Zeit, der oft mit modernen Mitteln des Masterings korrigiert wird.
