The Brilliant Green
The Japanese rock band The Brilliant Green was formed in Kyoto in 1995. Heavily influenced by several female-led alternative rock acts of the 1990s, the trio of Tomoko Kawase, Shunsaku Okuda, and Ryo Matsui made their official debut in 1997 with the standalone singles "Bye Bye Mr. Mug" and "Goodbye and Good Luck." In 1998, their single "There Will Be Love There (Ai no Aru Basho)" hit Number 1 in Japan thanks to its inclusion in the drama Love Again. Later that year, they scored yet another chart-topper with the single "Tsumetai Hana." Both tracks were included in their platinum-selling eponymous studio debut, which sold over 1 million copies in just two days and was presented on a sold-out national tour. The Brilliant Green continued their musical evolution on the follow-up albums Terra 2001 (1999) and Los Angeles (2001), which found the group experimenting with a heavier, shoegaze-tinged sound. After 2002's The Winter Album, the band was put on hold indefinitely so its members could focus on their individual projects. They reconvened in 2007 to celebrate their tenth anniversary with the singles "Stand By Me," "Enemy" and "Ash Like Snow," all of which cracked the Japanese Top 10 and appeared in the compilation Complete Single Collection '97–'08 (2008). Blackout, their first album for Warner Music, arrived in 2010 and was followed by The Swingin' Sixties (2014), a 60s reimagining of their greatest hits.
