Stephanie Kirkham

Born in Ribble Valley, Lancashire, Stephanie Kirkham grew up on a musical diet of Joni Mitchell, the Beatles, and Johnny Cash, dreaming of becoming a songwriter. While attending Blackpool Art College, she mailed a cappella versions of some early songs to Parlophone A&M man Jamie Nelson and these eventually became the basis of her debut album. That Girl was released in 2003 on Virgin imprint Hut Records, with whom Kirkham had signed a multi-album deal. Led by the infectious single "Inappropriate,' the album introduced Kirkham's upbeat, winsome pop sound. Sadly, a mere six months after the release, the Hut label folded and she was dropped from the Virgin roster. Undeterred, she then teamed up with fellow musician Johnny Dunne to record a follow-up album on her own label, SLK Music. Sunlight on My Soul, an enchanting mixture of Tudor madrigals, Celtic folk, and jazz was released in 2006 to critical acclaim. In the decade following its release, Kirkham largely removed herself from the music industry, shifting her focus to the visual arts. She returned to music in 2016 with her uplifting, hook-filled third LP, Tiny Spark, which was recorded and produced by Phil Thornalley.
