Mae Stephens

Known for her relatable, personal lyrics, strong, soul-steeped vocals, and often playful approach to production, Mae Stephens is a singer and songwriter from the English East Midlands. She broke through as a teenager with the mega-viral "If We Ever Broke Up," which landed in the U.K. Top 15 in 2023. A major-label deal and collaborations with the likes of the Chainsmokers and Meghan Trainor soon followed. Stephens began 2024 with the similarly cathartic solo outing "ADHD." A native of Kettering, Anna Mae Kelly started writing songs around the age of 12. Using music as a form of therapy while being bullied in school, she took part in open-mike nights and started booking gigs in pubs. Eventually, she self-released ballads such as 2020's "Infamous Kiss" and the next year's "White Lies" under the stage name Mae Stephens, meanwhile building a TikTok following. Stephens was 19 years old and working a day job at a supermarket when clips of late 2022's ironically titled "If We Ever Broke Up" (about an ex) started blowing up on TikTok with its playful mix of funky soul and hooky electro-pop. Scouts at EMI quickly reached out and gave the song an official release on New Year's Day 2023, helping it go viral to the tune of hundreds of millions of streams. The song eventually reached number 13 on the U.K. singles chart and cracked Billboard's Global 200. Alternate versions of the song (sped up, acoustic, and a slew of remixes) soon surfaced, and before the end of the year, Stephens released collaborations with Meghan Trainor ("Mr Right"), Alok and the Chainsmokers ("Jungle"), and KUROMI ("Cheeky But Charming"). The singer's first release of 2024 was a return to solo status with "ADHD," which continued in the cathartic vein of her global hit.
