Karen Almquist
Folk-blues singer/songwriter Karen Almquist is a product of the same Northern California folk scene that spawned the late Kate Wolf, and Almquist collaborates with many of Wolf's musical associates. In fact, Almquist's debut album, 1996's Tracking of Time, was produced by Wolf's longtime musical partner, Nina Gerber. However, Almquist has an earthier sound and stronger vocal presence than the comparatively weedy Wolf, and sounds like her biggest musical influence is Bonnie Raitt's earliest, bluesiest albums. Like Raitt, Almquist is both a fine singer and a stinging bottleneck slide player. Since the release of Tracking of Time, Almquist has continued playing the club circuit in Northern California and Oregon, as well as folk festivals nationwide.
