Indian Askin

The project of Dutch singer, songwriter, and producer Nelson "Chino" Ayala, Indian Askin weaves together a noisy mixture of psych-pop, punk, and melodic indie rock. After a lengthy formative period, the Amsterdam-based musician signed with Warner and released 2016's Sea of Ethanol, making the Dutch Top Ten and winning an Edison Award for Best Newcomer. Following European tours and numerous festival appearances in the Netherlands, Indian Askin returned with 2019's Another Round. The single "Possessed" arrived in 2023. Ayala first began working under the Indian Askin name in 2007, though it wasn't until the early part of the next decade that the project found its footing. Working with producers Peter Kriek and Ariaan Olieroock, Ayala began to shape his sound, taking inspiration from '90s grunge and punk as well the South American heritage of his Paraguayan father, a harpist and percussionist. In the mid-2010s, Indian Askin operated as more of a traditional rock band, gigging around the Netherlands at prominent festivals and eventually signing a major-label deal with Warner. Co-produced by Kriek and Ayala, 2016's Sea of Ethanol was a success at home, reaching number eight on the Dutch charts. The band supported the release with appearances at Pinkpop, Best Kept Secret, and other prominent festivals. 2019 saw the release of both the Deep End EP and a follow-up album, Another Round. By the early 2020s, Indian Askin had moved away from band activity as Ayala resumed recording and producing on his own. 2023's rugged "Possessed" marked the first taste of his third album.
