A Certain Smile
Initially founded in 2002, Portland-based indie pop outfit A Certain Smile spent a lengthy development period recording a scattering of demos before making their existence official in 2015. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Thomas Andrew began shaping his melodic and sometimes noisy guitar pop in Philadelphia, eventually moving cross-country to Portland, Oregon, where he formed the quartet that would eventually record the band's aptly named debut album, Fits & Starts. Bearing the influence of labels like Slumberland and Sarah Records as well as groups like the Swirlies and the Lilys, A Certain Smile's debut was released in August 2017. They followed up in 2019 with the three-song EP Bae.
