The Colombian ensemble Música Ficta, here denoted Música Ficta Colombia to distinguish it from other Renaissance groups with that name, has already recorded one album devoted to the Spanish Renaissance tonos humanos, or secular songs, of composer José Marín, and here, the group offers a second album devoted to Marín, with an evocative title drawn from one of the songs, Ahora que estáis dormida. It might seem like a lot for a composer who's not much known, but there are several draws. The first is simply the attractive, laid-back sound of Música Ficta. It is not as luxuriant as that of a Marín recording by Montserrat Figueras from some years back, but hear the limpid, lyrical recorder playing of Carlos Serrano. Another difference from the earlier release (En mi amor tal ausencia: Love and heartbreak in the tonos of José Marín) is that this one provides a different context for Marín's songs. Both albums feature instrumental works in addition to the Marín pieces, but the ones here focus on the crackling dances that display popular influences, some of them African. Música Ficta has mostly specialized in Latin American Baroque music. It is not clear whether Marín traveled to the Americas (he had an interesting biography that included being accused of murder, imprisoned, and tortured), but he definitely knew genres like the canarios and jácaras that became popular there, and they permeated his music. These pieces are rendered crisply by the Música Ficta quartet, and the album will have an appeal beyond aficionados of the Spanish Renaissance.
