Based on the Hindu principle of navarasa, the nine emotions which artists can express, this third album from the trio continues the subtle alignment of James Yorkston’s singing of Scottish poetry of James Yorkston (guitar, nyckelharpa and vocals) with the North Indian traditions carried by Suhail Yusuf Khan, singer and sarangi player who comes from a long line of musicians going back to the Mughal empire (16th-18th centuries). This fascinating meeting of two apparently separate worlds is also attended by the jazzy beats of English double bassist Jon Thorne. On Westlin Winds, the verses of bard Robert Burns (1759-1795) are put to the music of the Sufi mystic Amir Khusaru. The Qawwali song Waliyan Da Raja flourishes on energetic chords played on folk guitars; Thumri Bhairavi, a semi-classical piece of thumri music, played in the raga Bhairavi way, accommodates many languid chords from the double bass’ bow. Twa Brothers, a Celtic romance sung a cappella by Yorkston, is contrasted with Khan’s percussive syllables. Everywhere, the dialogue between East and West is frank and enchanting. After the supple unravelling of these nine emotions, be they positive or negative, calm or energetic, the one that resounds the most strongly afterwards is that of serenity. © Benjamin MiNiMuM/Qobuz
