German coloratura soprano Simone Kermes has chosen to declare his love as it was sung in France, Italy, Spain and England in the seventeenth century. But often, we are greeted by painful love, betrayal - far from the hot and languorous statements that can sometimes be found in other repertoires. Somewhere between Lamento della Ninfa of Monteverdi, which is the opening to the recording itself, Didon’s "When I am laid" and Aeneas by Purcell she manages to deliver one of the most heart wrenching moments in vocal music imaginable, travelling straight to the bottom of the heart of the poor humans in this troubled time - the dreadful Thirty Years War, the abominable English Civil War, the Franco-Spanish war, the War of Holland, to name but a handful. Simone Kermes unfolds the true extent of her vocal range here, a quasi-dramatic coloratura soprano in the high notes, to a gravelly voice crooner on the deeper notes - a musical "cosmopolitanism" that has annoyed some, and amazed others. She is accompanied by the ensemble La Magnifica Comunità Enrico Casazza, a dozen very talented baroque musicians. Recorded in April 2015 in Padua, Italy. ©SM/Qobuz
