It sounds like the script for the next Marvel production: four super musicians uniting to combine their superpowers. The team? Ballaké Sissoko on kora, Vincent Segal on cello, Emile Parisien on saxophone and Vincent Peirani on accordion. The mission? To make sure no music lover ever feels bored again. Each of these musicians have long been masters of their instruments, transcending labels and music genres. Sissoko and Segal have teamed up before, as have Parisien and Peirani. The four of them met in 2019 for a largely improvisational concert at the Nuits de Fourvière festival. Les égarés is the discographic sequel to this encounter, and it’s nothing short of a marvel. The music is bright and given plenty of room to breathe, not boxed into stylistic exercises and ego battles. Between popular tunes, traditional African or Eastern European melodies and contemporary jazz, these four musicians prove that their musical inspirations and capabilities are wide-ranging. Every one of these renowned instrumentalists is recognisable in their own right, but the whole they form together goes far beyond the individual. They come together as one, wind and strings, to create music that sails like a great ship towards undiscovered horizons. Though this group may give the impression that they’re a small orchestra performing popular music, don’t be fooled by the ease with which they handle their instruments. These musicians are the cream of the crop. Completely instrumental and exceptionally eloquent, this music is a bottomless ocean of emotions, atmospheres and fantasy. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
