Fans of out-of-this-world artists should give Laurel Halo a try as soon as possible. She’s a musician and an experimental artist born in Michigan and based in Berlin, who cut her teeth in the most basic synth pop and the most classical techno before following more groundbreaking paths, in which the voice plays an essential role. Hers of course, but also of others (Julia Holter is involved in Dust), which she tweaks in every direction. It’s hard not to think of the late Arthur Russell who remains a reference in other worldly electro. With this third album, Laurel Halo builds fascinating layers of sounds and textures. A collage where anything goes: pure electro, free jazz, soul, techno, repetitive music, melancholic pop, etc. Only designed for initiated, trained or simply curious ears, this type of avant-garde collages doesn’t leave you unmoved. Provided that you accept to wander in the maze of an adventuring producer’s brain, who plays with the listener’s subconscious as well as their memory.
