Four years after his aggressive debut as Agust D, BTS member Suga delves inward on his sophomore solo effort, D-2. Fleshed out and feeling more like a fully realized album than merely a mixtape, the introspective ten-song set plays with space and mood, flowing from atmospheric R&B-influenced soundscapes ("People," "Moonlight") to raucous hybrids combining traditional Korean instrumentation and hardcore hip-hop production ("Daechwita"). Along with the advances in sound, D-2 also showcases the rapper's matured lyrical content, which shines on contemplative cuts like "28," a song that finds Suga ruminating on growing up and coming of age. In addition to guests NiiHWA, MAX, and Kim Jong Wan of NELL, BTS bandmate RM also drops in for a raw examination of the state of the world on "Strange." While not as in your face as Agust D, D-2 is a big step forward for Suga, an evolution in both style and substance.
