While Backbone is a member of the Dungeon Family crew that also includes Southern rap heavyweights such as Outkast and Goodie Mob, the Altlanta rapper take a decidedly different approach to hip-hop. While those groups have a broader perspective, Backbone's music is drenched with images of street life and drug dealing. Tracks like the lead single, "5-Deuce-4 Tre," and "Under Streetlights" offer blow-by-blow accounts of life as a drug dealer. Musically, Backbone offers some typical Southern bounce although he does throw in a pleasant surprise with "Like This" which has an old-school Run-DMC feel to it. Although the ten-year vet has plenty of lyrical prowess, he wastes most of it on tired, old ghetto clichés. Instead of relying on the same tired imagery and taking the easy way out, it seems Backbone should probably try and grow one.
