Every new album by Fred Hersch feels like a divine gift from above, and Breath by Breath is no exception. Created by Brad Mehldau’s former teacher alongside Drew Gress on double bass and Jochen Rueckert on drums, and with a special appearance from the Crosby Street String Quartet (Joyce Hammann and Laura Seaton on violins, Lois Martin on viola and Jody Redhage Ferber on cello), this release is a real treat. The history of jazz is no stranger to experimental strings, whether that be chamber groups (as seen on this album) or symphony orchestras. From Charlie Parker and Bill Evans to Jim Hall, Stan Getz, Clifford Brown and Cannonball Adderley, many have tried their hand at achieving what seems to come so naturally to Hersch. "I grew up listening to string quartets. My piano teacher was the wife of the cellist from the famous LaSalle Quartet. I used to lie on the carpet in their living room when I was a young kid and watch them rehearse, quietly following along, hearing how the viola part fit with the first violin, or the second violin with the cello. Ever since I started studying composition at the age of eight, almost all my music has been focused on four melodic parts. So, string quartets are a natural musical configuration for me.
