Two things have always characterised OutKast’s music, and therefore one half of them, Big Boi: the apparent flippancy of funk influences and the desire to bring a form of brutality, a certain radicalness. Always respecting this belief, Big Boi joins forces with Sleepy Brown, a long-time friend and lifelong companion who was part of the Organized Noize beatmakers collective that helped put Atlanta on the American rap map in the early 1990s. In the summer of 2021, the excellent single Can't Sleep was released. The sample of The 5th Dimension's 1972 song (Last Night) I Didn't Get To Sleep At All, and its hot video, set the pace for this album, Big Sleepover. Between the exacerbated almost sleazy sensuality of Baller or Animalz, and the skilful grooves of Do Ya Best, there's this desire to go head-on, to go back to basics. This is seen on the almost academic traps Sucka Free or The Big Sleep Is Over. The old pals are on board, with Killer Mike and Backbone on the industrial, destructive track Return Of The Dope Boi, which shows that Big Boi is capable of doing almost anything with disconcerting ease. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
