Travelling companions of Claude Nougaro and Bernard Lubat, author of the children’s book Tanbou, the singer, trumpet player and drummer Edmony Krater is one of the essential actors of the contemporary Guadeloupian gwo ka. Put back on tracks by the label Heavenly Sweetness, which rereleased in 2016 Tijan Pou Velo, his homage to Marcel Lollia aka Vélo, one of the mythical figures of this percussive music from the maroon slaves, Edmony Krater offers a set of new compositions. Assisted by an efficient quartet (acoustic and electric pianist Frank Souriant, bass player Julian Babou, drummer Kulusé Souriant and ka drummer Pascal Bilongue), Edmony Krater leads the band with flexibility. His gwo ka, blended with jazz-rock or funk, benefits from nice trumpet sections and tender singing. Despite a surprising conclusion on reggae rhythms, slightly inferior to the rest of the album, An Ka Sonjé is a most refreshing poetic and fruitful islet. ©BM/Qobuz
