A rising tide lifts all boats, and with the crossover success of Maren Morris, Kacey Musgraves and Brandi Carlile, women in country music are riding a powerful wave right now. The genre hallmarks of being cheated on and lied to haven't gone away, but today's females are confident, independent and have lyrical life that ventures far beyond men — exploring feminism, family conflict, even societal outcasts (Carlile's "The Joke") and homelessness ("Somebody's Daughter" by Tenille Townes). And they'll create their own trouble, thank you very much. Sonically, these ladies borrow from rock (Aubrie Sellers) and rockabilly (Lillie Mae), soul (Lindsay Ell) and R&B (Kassi Ashton), and there's a deep reverence for country roots, as shown by Ashley McBryde, Leslie Stevens and Margo Price. They're also having it both ways: successful solo careers and sisterhood, with supergroups like Pistol Annies and The Highwomen, and Miranda Lambert gathering her tour openers for a spirited cover of "Fooled Around and Fell in Love."
