About Playlist

The Sardinian trumpet player Paolo Fresu has established himself as one of the major soloists in Europe on his instrument. And beyond the exceptional trumpet player, who is influenced by Miles Davis and Chet Baker, we also admire the conductor, composer and arranger who has shown an intense and eclectic musical activity and an abundant record production. Upon the release of his album "Two Minuettos" with Uri Caine in June 2017, he tells us about what he is listening to, classics and more recent discoveries. "What I call "lifelong" music is the artists who have drawn the history of jazz and who will continue to be listened to, such as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Bill Evans. We keep their vinyl records or albums at hand because there is always a good opportunity to share them.

In contrast, today's music consists of new passions born of curiosity, like Damon Albarn for me. They are often suggested by friends or during a discussion at the restaurant. Or sometimes they are linked to geography or memories, like the CD of Maria Bethânia that I bought in Salvador de Bahia and which carries inside the tastes, the colours and the smells of Brazil. And there are still other listenings, crazy and unexpected ones. Like the one when Miles Davis meets the Toto in a beautiful and intense version of "Don’t Stop Me Now".

And then there is music that does not belong to any time but evokes another time. It causes great emotions and act as a starting point of relationships; it traces new paths, and leads to the birth of new interpretations. Thanks to it, we have been able to discover new territories and reveal new worlds, new artists and repertoires. The baroque melodies of Monteverdi and Strozzi have inspired me other versions of "Si dolce è il tormento" and "Sino alla morte" arranged and recorded with new formations, for new records. There is also Sigur Ros, which led me to think about the link between music and atmosphere. These reflections then concretized during my jazz festival (where Lars Danielsson dedicated his piece "Berchidda" to my native country) and on the occasion of the Sardinian tour for my 50th birthday with fifty consecutive concerts in extraordinary places. Strauss' "Metamorphosen", directed by Karajan, inspired me to write a homonymous piece several years ago, and gave its name to a successful record for the BMG. Finally, I chose a previously unreleased Peter Gabriel song that I recorded (with his permission) for the album "Eros" with Omar Sosa, and a track taken from the production of my record company - a composition by David Bowie recorded by a young musician from southern Italy.
