About Playlist
Born dirt poor in the foothills of East Tennessee's Smoky Mountains — one of 12 children raised in a one-bedroom cabin — Dolly Parton began performing (and providing for her family) at age 10. She took the stage of the Grand Ole Opry before graduating high school, then went to Nashville to write songs for the likes of Skeeter Davis and Kitty Wells. While she didn't pen the first single she released, 1967's "Dumb Blonde" nevertheless set the tone for Dolly's tongue-in- cheek, witty attitude about her highly processed aesthetic. She also signed on with musician impresario Porter Wagoner, appearing on his weekly TV show and recording duets even as her solo career began to soar with "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors" and her first No. 1, "Joshua." But it was her professional split from the controlling Wagoner that led to one of her biggest songs, the indelible "I Will Always Love You." Even as she crossed over into pop territory — with the Barry Mann-Cynthia Weil track "Here You Come Again," movie hit "9 to 5" and Kenny Rogers duet "Islands in the Stream" — Dolly never strayed too far from her roots. From early smash "Mule Skinner Blues" (a cover of the Jimmie Rodgers classic) to later albums Little Sparrow and Halos and Horns, she's always been connected to bluegrass and Appalachian mountain music. Dolly’s also a generous spirit, duetting with everyone from Kris Kristofferson (on the overlooked goofball delight "Ping Pong") to Willie Nelson to Norah Jones, not to mention her incredible Trio records with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris.
