Cheb Kader
The musical traditions of Algeria are fused with modern influences by Algeria-born and France-based vocalist Cheb Kader. Respectfully known as "the prince of rai," Kader uses music as a vehicle for examining the role of women and artists in modern society and the problems caused by immigration. Born in Oran, Algeria to Moroccan parents, Kader moved to France at the age of nine, settling in the eastern French city of Mulhouse. Launching his musical career in 1986, he struggled to find an outlet for his music. Frustrated by his lack of success, he left music, in the early '90s, to focus on his family. He continued to work out songs in his home studio, however, and made his comeback with the Latin-tinged single "Mani," recorded as a duet with Sergent Garcia.
