Florida rapper Kodak Black takes an upward turn on When I Was Dead, his second studio album of 2023 and sixth overall. Just a little over five months earlier, Kodak sounded dazed and uninspired on the woefully weak Pistolz & Pearlz, an overly long collection of interchangeable, personality-free heartbreak trap. Expectations were low after that mediocre showing, but Kodak Black returns to form on When I Was Dead with emotionally raw lyrics and performances that are more present and substantial than usual. He's still rapping mainly about pain, addiction, grief, heartbreak, and betrayal, but there's a renewed energy in the best songs. He tries out different flows, sticking to the more pedestrian Auto-Tune melodic sing-rapping on the lovesick R&B of "Eaze Your Mind," but venturing into stranger zones on the rubbery "Burning Rubber," and hissing bars on the horror movie creep of "Facetime Hiding." Repetitive instrumentals are less of an issue on When I Was Dead, with snappy moments like the old-school minimalism of "Lemme See" keeping the album's flow lively. There are still about six songs too many, with a pretty equal ratio of exceptional tracks to forgettable ones. Even still, When I Was Dead is an unexpected improvement in what was seeming like a fast slump downward.
