The Vibrations' 1961 Watusi album was like many rock & roll records of its era: a handful of 45s bolstered by four additional tracks cut around the same time. While it's not an upper-crust product of the period when R&B vocal groups were evolving from doo wop and rock & roll to soul, it's OK, highlighted by one of the better dance rock hits from the time, "The Watusi." There are a bunch more lumpy upbeat boisterous R&B-rock tunes, though none as good as "The Watusi." Elsewhere on the record, the group displays far more conventional doo wop roots on slow ballads like "So Blue," which sounds like a mix of the Flamingos and Little Anthony & the Imperials. "So Little Time," while also a ballad, has a bit of the burgeoning sophistication (including flute) of early soul music that was being pioneered by the Motown and Vee-Jay labels at the time. All tracks from the LP are on the two-CD compilation Out of Sight! The Checker Years, which has everything the Vibrations recorded for Chess in the early '60s.
