Though the rhythms he chooses sometimes flirt with the frenetic pulse of dancehall, Mikey Spice specializes in smoothly delivered lovers rock, a style as old as reggae itself. Spice’s gentle croon is a rarity in contemporary reggae and consciously hearkens back to the easygoing era of Alton Ellis and Slim Smith. Veteran producer Lloyd Campbell selected 16 classic rhythms for Spice to work with on this album, including the old Upsetters chestnut, “My Way,” which Spice masterfully refashions into the gently loping “Pull It Up.”
