No bigger musical talent ever hit Hollywood than the diminutive Erich Wolfgang Korngold. In less than a decade, Korngold transformed movie music from an annoying aural atmosphere to soaring, surging, and sweeping skyscapes of sonic splendor. With his gorgeous melodies, glorious orchestrations, and voluptuous harmonies, Korngold created the sound of movie music, and the Hollywood hills are still alive with it. This generous disc by André Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra has four of Korngold's best scores on it, and each one receives a performance as good or better than the best previously recorded. Previn -- no mean movie music composer himself -- believes in Korngold's celluloid visions with his whole heart and soul, and Korngold's blazing fanfares, blistering love themes, and blustering marches are all delivered with overwhelming conviction. Previn's belief compels the London Symphony to perform with brilliance and passion. Deutsche Grammophon's sound is extraordinarily vivid. This is one of the biggest and best compact discs of Korngold's music ever recorded.
