Simply put, this is the first definitive recording of Noel Coward's revues that focuses on his performances of the songs he wrote for them. EMI has assembled an anthology of the definitive performances, many by Coward himself. While virtually all of these tunes appeared years before and sung by others, the performances here are considered the definitive ones -- and with good reason. These performances span the years 1928-1952 and include songs from the revues for London Calling, On With the Dance, This Year of Grace, Cochran's 1931 Revue, Words and Music, Sigh No More, The Lyric Revue, and The Globe Revue. To be sure, Coward's own readings of these songs -- with his grainy tenor on such numbers as "Poor Little Rich Girl" and "Parisian Pierrot" -- are the most inspiring. They offer different nuances, a more subtly sophisticated humor, and a more droll kind of biting poignancy, as on "Half Caste Woman," his second hymn to a prostitute after "Love for Sale." There is wry, biting racist humor in "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" and "London Pride," and perhaps the most biting song on the disc is the blackly humorous "There Are Bad Times Just Around the Corner," a cynical diatribe against formality in difficult times. This collection will do little to change the minds of those who aren't interested in Coward. For those mildly to enthusiastically interested, however, this is a revelatory set, one that is priced right and handsomely presented. This collection is a keen, scrutable view of the father of 20th century British songwriters.
