A sumptuous recital. Winner of the Queen Elizabeth Competition in 2014, the young Belgian soprano Sheva Tehoval, with her absolutely magnificent timbre, notably offers us, through subtle sequences, three youthful cycles by three modern major composers. In 1888, Debussy (aged 26) wrote his collection of six melodies Ariettes oubliées in the same year as Strauss (then 24) wrote his Mädchenblumen. Ten years later, Schönberg (aged 25) composed his 4 Lieder, Op. 2. A short foray into the contemporary era, with a triptych from 2004, Wolfgang Rihm's Drei Hölderlin-Gedichte—the second number Hälfte des Lebens is very moving.
Sheva Tehoval seems particularly at home with French melodies, which she says she has loved since her teens. Her diction is close to exemplary, and her timbre distils an irresistible light throughout the eleven melodies by Debussy, with whom she begins and ends her recording. Impressive! In the slightly naïve, sometimes moody style of Schönberg's Op. 2, Sheva Tehoval reveals a beautiful and expressive touch, transcending in particular the final Waldsonne. However, it is to Debussy's forgotten Ariettes oubliées that one returns most quickly, as Sheva Tehoval seems to have heard Mélisande herself (Il pleure dans mon cœur), with her gentle sensuality.
A magnificent discovery, which makes us impatient for the next recorded recitals of the Belgian soprano. © Pierre-Yves Lascar/Qobuz
