Swedish soprano Miah Persson has a medium-sized voice that has been deployed in both opera and chamber-sized vocal works but is perhaps at its best in the likes of Mahler and other orchestral-vocal music. She has an agile voice that can convey artless (or mock-artless) melody very effectively, and this is certainly relevant to the musical language of Robert and Clara Schumann. Her program on this album of "portraits" (the title refers generally to the subject matter of the songs, most of which can be taken as portraits of women) doesn't really set out to be the detailed examination of Robert and Clara Schumann's interaction as song composers that others have attempted: the program is primarily devoted to Robert. But it almost turns out that way, for she has a real feel for the ways in which the couple's interaction led Clara beyond her basically Schubertian language in a song like Lorelei (track 10). She's quite attractive in the light language of the songs from Robert Schumann's Myrthen, Op. 25, though a bit less involving in the cycle Frauenliebe und -leben, Op. 42 (saved for the end) and the more unusual and arch-Romantic Gedichte des Königin Maria Stuart, Op. 135 (Poems of Queen Mary Stuart). The biggest problem here is the sound, where Super Audio technology cannot disguise an empty, washed-out quality that has nothing to do with a Liederabend of Schumann's time; the balance between Persson and pianist Joseph Breinl is tilted unpleasantly in Breinl's favor, and this is probably not the fault of the performers. On balance there's much to like here in a recording by a rising vocal star.
