Few second acts in rap were as startling in their ambition as the one the Beastie Boys underwent after leaving Def Jam. If Licensed to Ill had established them as irreverent maniacs out of some Tex Avery version of Animal House, Paul's Boutique ditched the frathouse for the arthouse and built a postmodern pop-culture kaleidoscope around an incredibly deep well of referential humor and musical breadth. The Dust Brothers' sample-heavy production continues to impress decades later,. Not just because of its impossible-to-repeat free-for-all of source material—the canons of classic rock, old-school R&B, and the Beasties' own hip-hop contemporaries are represented to a degree that rivals the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Itself—but because it finds countless forms for its funk, whether it's reversing the disco backlash ("Hey Ladies"), out-muscling the hard rockers of the Sunset Strip ("Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun"), or taking effectively strange detours into country blues ("Johnny Ryall") or bloodshot dub ("3 Minute Rule"). But it's not even enough to have one of the most audaciously produced slate of hip-hop beats ever presented; Paul's Boutique is where the Beasties revealed just how hard they could rock mics when left to their own devices. MCA, Ad-Rock, and Mike D are all at the height of their prowess here, combining impeccable mic-pass timing, a newly elastic ease to their nasally barking tone, and more outlandish stories and knucklehead punchlines than a season's worth of sitcoms. © Nate Patrin/Qobuz
