Novelist and multipurpose musician from the Rennes scene (rock, noise, contemporary...), Olivier Mellano has conceived this ambitious work to divert the martial sound of a Breton bagad and embrace a militant and poetic point of view on the subjectivity of borders. To bring his antinationalist message—that is however respectful of identities—he developed a long text in English, translated in 17 languages on the website mellanoland.com, on the baritone voice of Brendan Perry, the singer of the legendary duo Dead Can Dance. Composed of a unique piece of 40 minutes, No Land makes the best use of these ingredients. Breton bagpipes, bagpipes and the specific drum rolls of these orchestras originally conceived for military parades lead the march. Brendan Perry’s powerful voice, sometimes emphasized by a chorus, modulates Mellano’s verses and brings to them a breathtaking lyricism. Bass in hand, the composer highlights and softens the movements. The ensemble evolves in a regular and determined flow towards its irrevocable conclusion: “Just one for all or no land”. © BM/Qobuz
