This EP release appeared early in the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with the participants volunteering their time and all proceeds going to the charitable organization Aktion Deutschland Hilft. It hit the best-seller charts in April of that year, and indeed, it is worth hearing beyond the social good involved. The key point is that this is not just music for Ukraine but music from Ukraine; all three of the composers featured are essentially Ukrainian (Jan Freidlin was born in Russian Siberia but spent much of his career in Odesa before emigrating to the West). The music of all three strikes a broadly inspirational tone that is not absent from Russian music but is far from characteristic. Daniel Hope and accompanist Alexey Botvinov offer three of Freidlin's Seven Landscapes, and these will resonate with listeners who have seen images of the Ukrainian countryside despoiled by Russian troops. This is a timely release from Hope that will not disappoint listeners who buy it from purely charitable motivations.
