More than 50 years ago, Marvin Gaye released What's Going On, a monumental album on the theme of ecological emergency. This could be considered somewhat early for the time. With his fifth album, Mádibá, Blick Bassy reveals himself as a disciple of Marvin Gaye....gently and with ease. Nothing surprising there; he is after all, a huge fan. Blick Bassy has long ceased to be a mere singer. Originally from Cameroon, his records are reminiscent of a conscientious and committed historian, mixing his personal history with that of Cameroon and the African diaspora. This new album is based around the theme of water; a precious, rare, and vital resource. A universal theme, explored by stories that Blick Bassy sings in bassa, his native language. It does not facilitate the literal understanding of the stories, but the intention and the meaning are evident through the sound. Based on synthetic arrangements (shaped by the gifted Malik Djoudi), a light guitar, some brass instruments, and Blick Bassy’s confident voice, this album is particularly mellow. The songs seem somewhat still on the surface, but they slide, sparkle, flow and know how to become turbulent when Blick Bassy really pushes his voice to the limits. Like water that irrigates and infiltrates everywhere, even when it is out-of-sight, this music does not fit into any particular genre. But the most precious thing about these songs is the subtlety of the emotions expressed by Blick Bassy, who logically can turn water into tears. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
