Inextricably linked to its twin, Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni, Leoncavallo's drama, in this famous recording made at La Scala in Milan in 1965 is given a treatment which, made an impact on several generations, and still inspires admiration and respect today. First and foremost, Carlo Bergonzi's extraordinary rendition of Canio brings to the role an intensely emotional image of humanity wronged.
Who can hear the great aria "Vesti la giubba" without feeling a shiver of pity for that wounded man who must still play the clown ("pagliaccio" in Italian) in spite of his pain? It is a modern demonstration of Diderot's theme of the fate of the actor who makes people laugh while mourning the sadnesses of his life under his mask. "Ridi, Pagliaccio!” ("Laugh, clown/ At your broken love!").
Karajan here is at the zenith of his career and makes the La Scala Orchestra thrill in technicolor, magnified by a classic 1960s sound engineering effort which creates an almost perfect balance between the choir, the singers and the orchestra. Karajan brings almost a Wagnerian intensity to the famous orchestral Intermezzo, which precedes the dénouement of a drama which is only heightened by the intense Calabrian sun. © François Hudry/Qobuz
