"‘Sequence One’ is about running through a war zone of post-apocalyptic proportions with your significant other. It was one of the first tracks we wrote when we started making Happy In The Hollow.", explains bassist Maxim Barron. With a hallucinatory rhythm section supported by a strong bass line and Tom Dougall's incandescent voice, the opening track of Happy In The Hollow offers a very good overview of what it precedes. "Each song was a blank canvas". Indeed, Toy work on their chiaroscuro here, made of shoegaze and indie pop like Radio Dept in the Clinging To A Scheme era. There are the delicate strings of Mistake a Stranger and their distorted effects, the frantic drums of Energy, the shimmering percussion of The Willo or the aerial synths that perforate this vaporous fresco that’s full of contrasts. The English band, who are signed with Tough Love Records, produced the album themselves, recorded between their own studio and South London. Beautiful. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
