Energized by fighting adversity in song and in real life, Lizzie Quinlan, who performs as Lizzie No, says she's not ready for the world to match autobiography to her music. Most of her excellent third full length, Halfsies, is laden with personal details and experiences, realizing who she is and wrestling with questions of race, money and those forever complicated dynamics of relationships. "Been sober a year now," begins the low and sweet "Mourning Dove Waltz." Later in the chorus, Quinlan divulges,"I guess I've been better/ I know I've been worse/ But I gave up on wishin'/ I don't go to church/ I just keep my head down/ And turn up the radio." Against crashing cymbals, the title track sums up her less-than-rosy opinion of love: "Even good love is a one-lane road/ It's honor among thieves." But as a seeker, she successfully uncovers nuggets of self-knowledge throughout Halfsies, none more direct than in "Lagunita." Against a roaring full-band, indie-guitar-rock background she discerns, "It never occurred to me that grief should refer to something bad that happened/ And maybe you're broken 'cause you lost someone."
Quinlan's impulse to rock out and add crunch to her songs—a shift aided by guitarist Graham Richman and Sheryl Crow's drummer Fred Eltringham—returns in "Annie Oakley" and in the pounding "Getaway Car." Her voice is more nuanced than powerful, but it's strong throughout. There are also a number of stylish touches throughout Halfsies, which was recorded in Nashville and New York City. Four-part harmonies from Kate Victor, Ali Fenwick, Jessi Olsen and Yaz Hoffman-Shahin lift up Quinlan's bright vocals on "The Heartbreak Store." Josh Grange's pedal steel adds texture to several tracks including "Getaway Car," in which he also plays the unmistakably resonant baritone guitar. A string quartet of Katherine Hyun (violin), Nathan Schram (viola), Amy Schroeder (violin) and Andrew Yee (cello) adds its voices to the background of three tunes, most prominently "Mourning Dove Waltz." Despite the challenge implied by her adopted name, this talented songwriter's answer to embracing life is an assured approval. © Robert Baird/Qobuz
