Is Danilo Plessow not the perfect DJ for a Fabric compilation? Fabric is a London club/label which is set apart from the competition by its decision to allow its DJs free rein to pursue their creativity as they see fit. And given Plessow's eclecticism and adventurous spirit, Fabric fans have been eagerly awaiting a collaboration with him. He has a renowned nose for "digging": searching away in Detroit, New York and Chicago, he found the right vibe for Berlin, is worshipped in the UK, and is sufficiently laid-back to play Ibiza. MCDE is an open-minded, curious DJ, who creates unpredictable mixes that run the gamut from northern soul to acid techno. In the German's 2011 contribution to DJ-Kicks, another major compilation series, he let rip with funk, soul, afrobeat and free jazz. But here, he places electronic music firmly in centre stage.
The substantial tracklist starts off with the dub flavours of Rhythm & Sound with Tikiman on the microphone, before moving swiftly into the 90s house revival with Scientist, a Deep House gem from Ray Castoldi, the founder of the New York label X-Ray. Then, a trippy remix of the English genius Herbert on Can't Take It by Recloose. As is par for the course with Fabric compilations, MCDE throws in two unreleased tracks, the electro / jazz hybrid Nightfall with saxophonist Francesco Geminiani and vibraphonist Peter Schlamb; and Decay / Sustain / Release made under his alias Basic-Variation, which gives one the impression that he has set up a TB - 303 in a steam room.
The remainder of the album is a veritable mine of forgotten diamonds: don't miss the hypnotic Broken Machines by Roy Davis Jr; Power by Random Ladder With 40, coming straight from the jungle; and above all, be sure to catch the incredible Stones of Law, which was released in 1980 by the French master Jean-Claude Petit, with André Ceccarelli on drums. If you start hearing voices as you play this record, do not be alarmed: it's just Danilo Plessow asking his friends what music meant to them during a pandemic. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
